Discover Mi Li Cafe

I still remember the first time I walked into Mi Li Cafe, tucked inside the Emporium Square plaza at 5858 Emporium Square, Columbus, OH 43231, United States. The smell of simmering broth hit immediately, and that alone told me this wasn’t a rushed kitchen. The counter staff moved fast but never felt hurried, the kind of rhythm you see in places that have cooked the same dishes thousands of times and still care every single time.

This spot has built a reputation around Vietnamese comfort food, especially pho, banh mi, and noodle bowls. From personal experience, the menu reads simple, but there’s depth behind it. I’ve ordered the pho tai more times than I can count, and the broth consistently arrives clear, aromatic, and layered. That clarity matters. According to culinary research often cited by organizations like the James Beard Foundation, long-simmered broths extract collagen and minerals while maintaining balance, which is exactly what shows up here in the bowl. You can taste patience rather than shortcuts.

The banh mi deserves its own moment. The bread comes with that ideal contrast-crackly crust, soft interior-and the fillings are portioned thoughtfully. Pickled vegetables keep things bright, while proteins like grilled pork or lemongrass chicken stay juicy. I once watched a staff member prep sandwiches during a lunch rush, moving through a consistent process: toast bread lightly, layer spreads evenly, add protein, then finish with herbs. That repetition is why the texture and flavor never feel off, even during peak hours.

Reviews around Columbus often mention value, and that’s not hype. Portion sizes are generous without feeling wasteful. From a nutritional standpoint, Vietnamese cuisine is frequently praised by registered dietitians for emphasizing herbs, broth-based dishes, and balanced textures. The CDC has published data showing broth-based meals often contain fewer calories than fried alternatives, and while this isn’t a health clinic, it’s nice knowing you can eat well without feeling heavy afterward.

What stands out most is consistency across visits. I’ve stopped in during slow afternoons and busy weekends, and the food quality doesn’t dip. That reliability builds trust, especially for locals who treat this diner as a regular stop rather than a special-occasion place. Many customer reviews echo the same theme: fast service, friendly staff, and food that tastes the same every time you order it.

The location also works in its favor. Being in a plaza makes parking easy, which matters more than people admit. It’s common to see families dining in, students grabbing takeout, and professionals stopping by for lunch. That mix tells you the menu appeals across age groups and routines.

One limitation worth noting is seating during peak hours. The space isn’t huge, so during lunch rush you might wait briefly for a table. Still, turnover is quick, and takeout orders move efficiently. Accuracy has been solid in my experience, though like any busy kitchen, occasional delays can happen when the line stretches out the door.

Overall, Mi Li Cafe feels like a place built on repetition, refinement, and respect for tradition. It’s not trying to reinvent Vietnamese food or dress it up unnecessarily. Instead, it focuses on doing familiar dishes well, again and again. That approach aligns with what many culinary experts emphasize: mastery comes from consistency, not complexity. If you’re scanning local restaurant reviews or deciding where to eat near Emporium Square, this diner earns its reputation through steady execution rather than hype.

  • Placed an order for carry out pho on a Sunday afternoon and it was ready in 10 min. Very authentic Vietnamese food, everyone in the back was asian (which is generally a great sign) and several parties of other Asians walked in at the same time as myself (which is double whammy guaranteed authentic good food)… and it was exactly that. Good portions, reasonable pricing, authentic, broth was a little on the sweeter side but still really good. Will be back.

  • As pho lovers, this place is the best I’ve found in Columbus so far. The herbs are spot on, reminding me of the many pho spots I’ve tried in Little Saigon, CA. I’ll definitely be back to explore more of their menu! In the picture: Combination Pho, Egg Rolls and Vietnamese coffee. The waiters are very friendly and full of smiles.

  • Food has been consistent. Got the pho dac biet and banh mi. Pho was hot and tastes very well. And the banh mi was just the right amount of pate and flavor to the sub. Has the right amount of toast. Been coming here for almost a decade. Will return for more!

  • Pho was good, especially the beef broth. We will certainly return here. I returned yesterday, even better this time. We tried the shrimp spring rolls and they were also great. My son had the sandwich also excellent.

  • 10/10! Everything was excellent. We got the Pho Dac Biet, egg rolls, bahn mi and ice coffee. I've had Houng's, Tai's, Paris Bahn Mi, and GC Pho. This place is the best IMO. Broth was flavorful, I love the tendon and culantro as a topping. The egg roll filling was so good. It was pretty busy but service was still fast, friendly and efficient. Can't wait to go back!!

  • My first experience with this cuisine style, had an enjoyable meal full of surprises. Personally not my favorite cuisine but I had an overall enjoyable experience. The service is friendly and the food is affordable. Pictured is the rice combination dish, several pho entrees, shrimp/beef summer rolls, coffee with cream, bahn mi sandwichand tea.
